The Belair-Edison Neighborhood: A Community United

Stronger Together

Belair-Edison thrives on robust community partnerships, which are crucial for advocacy, engagement, and awareness. The promotion and development of Belair-Edison are spearheaded by Belair-Edison Neighborhoods, Inc. (BENI), in collaboration with numerous partners.

Community Organizations and Initiatives

Belair-Edison Community Association (BECA):
BECA aims to foster positive relationships among residents, promote health, welfare, and safety, and enhance the neighborhood's cleanliness and physical appearance. They actively address the needs of the community and strive to maintain a stable residential population through effective communication and support. For more information, you can contact BECA President, Rita Crews, at ritacrews@verizon.net.

St. Ambrose Housing Development:
A key partner with BENI, St. Ambrose Housing Development focuses on revitalizing neighborhoods by purchasing and renovating foreclosed properties to high standards. These efforts ensure homes have modern amenities and encourage neighboring homeowners to maintain their properties, preserving the community's integrity and value.

Morgan Community Mile (MCM):
Since 2013, the MCM initiative has engaged stakeholders within a one-mile radius of Morgan State University. This partnership includes university students, faculty, and community members working together to enhance the area. MCM focuses on five key areas: Health and Public Safety, Education and Youth Development, Environment, Community Investment, and Strengthening University/Community Relations.

Sydney’s Ice Creams Grand Opening:
On April 20, 2024, BENI celebrated the grand opening of Sydney’s Ice Creams at 3432 Belair Road. This space, once a vacant and deteriorated building, was transformed into a thriving business. The rehabilitation effort, which began in 2019, was completed in March 2023. This project exemplifies the community's dedication and the support of its backers, welcoming new entrepreneurs like Sydney Newton to the business corridor.

A Rich History of Family Homes and Commerce

The Many Georges of Georgetown:
In the mid-19th century, the intersection of Belair Turnpike (now Belair Road) and Erdman Avenue was the bustling hub of what was then known as Georgetown. Named after prominent citizens George Brehm, George Lamley, and George Erdman, the area was renowned for its breweries, with Brehm owning the largest.

Brewing Heritage:
George Brehm acquired Neisendorfer’s Brewery in 1866, renaming it Brehm’s Brewery, which became the largest employer in Georgetown. The brewery changed hands multiple times and survived Prohibition by producing sodas. The brewery's legacy lives on with the recent establishment of Oliver Brewery headquarters in the neighborhood.

Iconic Porch-Front Homes:
The 1920s saw significant residential growth in Belair-Edison, attracting homebuyers with well-crafted brick homes featuring generous yards. The majority of the neighborhood's homes were built during this era, with many designed by Frank Novak, known for his two-story porch-front homes. His legacy is honored with Kavon Avenue, named after him (Novak spelled backward).

Historical Sites:
Belair-Edison boasts historical sites like the former horse farm at Sinclair Lane Elementary School and Erdman Avenue, once known as “lover’s lane.” Many homes are still owned by the original families who bought them brand-new.

This narrative captures the essence of Belair-Edison, a neighborhood with a rich history and a strong community spirit, continually evolving through dedicated efforts and partnerships.
